Hinamatsuri
Saturday, March 3rd, 2007Concert at AJS
Saturday, February 10th, 2007Today we had Kana Mimaki-san and Maiko Sasaki-san’s concert at Austin Japanese school after the adhoc meeting for having an approval of new school board members.
Kana-san and Maiko-san are very talented musician and both are in the doctoral course at Rice University in Houston. Their play was truly _wonderful_ and I can’t express how I felt in any words (I just put wonderful, but really can’t :)). That was for sure superb experience for all our children to having such a great play in live.
Setsubun (spring celebration)
Saturday, February 3rd, 2007Setsubun is Japanese traditional event for celebrating coming spring by throwing beans (to outside from inside of the house). Ogre’s mask is icon for the bad thing; which is supposed to be kicked out from a house, and beans are used for repelling the ogres.
Miki made the mask of ogre at Japanese school. She tried to show the ogre’s tusk like in the picture.
Otoshi-dama…
Saturday, January 13th, 2007Miki finally knew what the Otoshi-dama is. It’s a Japanese traditional seasonal give away from adult to kids, yes, new year’s gift (usually monetary gift…). She got the goody-goods as the Otoshi-dama some presents from the Japanese school. (Origami, and so on).
So…. from now on, I may have to give her Otoshi-dama every year, if she remembered it! ![]()
Mochi-tsuki
Saturday, January 13th, 2007It’s rice cake making. In the new year party of the school. All of the participated students had chance to experiment the rice cake making.
In the picture, Miki pound the steamed rice with the mallet (with help for holding… it’s heavy :))
spinning top
Saturday, January 13th, 2007Again, most Saturday would be busy for Miki. We have Saturday school in the morning, and also school’s new year party in the afternoon. She was so excited and had a lot of fun with friends, but was totally exhausted at last.
The spinning top is Japanese traditional play in the new year time frame.
